In the Faroe Islands, it is said that seals are the souls of those who took their own lives at sea, condemned to swim the cold currents forever in the shape of a seal.
It is also said that one of these Seal Women once laid a curse upon a lineage, condemning its descendants to sorrow and misfortune until the day enough restless souls had gathered to form a ring around the island of Kalsoy.
Ella is of the Seal Woman’s Kin.
But Ella is not like the others.
And perhaps she will be the one to break the curse.

The Child of Darkness

Ella is born blind and learns to perceive the world through shadows, emotions, scents, and touch. She does not fear the darkness. She knows its hidden corners, its creatures, and its twisted shapes.
Gradually, she begins to hear the voices of those who came before her — the cursed souls of her lineage. They reach out from the shadows of the past, carrying old stories and longing for release from a curse that has haunted generations.

About the author

A Mother’s Story – A Daughter’s Life’s Work

A. K. Vilgaard (b. 1972) is an author, journalist, and one of Denmark’s most experienced advisors in corporate storytelling.

As a child, she would lie awake listening to her Faroese mother’s stories from the North Atlantic: wild, haunting, and unforgettable tales of strong women, the whims of the sea, love, and loss. At the age of thirteen, she made herself a promise — that one day she would write them down, ensuring that her mother’s world would not be lost. It is a promise she has carried with her ever since.

Many years later, the stories demanded to be told. The first manuscript was written in three intense weeks, but the novel would go on to undergo sixteen years of rewriting, research, and refinement.

The result is Tidal Born – The Sea Bears a Woman’s Soul, a sweeping and evocative novel inspired by real events and the history of her own family.

This is the first of two volumes set on the far edges of the Danish Kingdom. A sweeping North Atlantic saga about three remarkable women, each shaping the lives, lessons, and destinies of the next.

There is a two-hour ferry journey from the Faroese capital, Tórshavn, to Suðuroy, where Ella grows up in the thriving village of Vágur during the 1930s and 1940s. Suðuroy is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands' 18 islands, and its relative isolation from the others has resulted in a distinctly different dialect. It is therefore easy to hear where the book's protagonist comes from – people from other villages teasingly refer to Suðuroy as "Little Denmark" because the dialect contains many Danish words. However, this offers Ella little advantage when, at the age of 17, she finds herself alone in Copenhagen.
The book's protagonist, Ella, is skilled at repairing fishing nets. Having just arrived in Copenhagen at the age of 17, she initially finds work as a net mender. This manual craft involves repairing the holes in damaged nets using a needle and twine. However, this traditional Faroese trade is soon replaced by jobs as a smørrebrød assistant (preparing traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches), a nursing aide, and a soldering operator in the electronics industry.
Before sheep were brought to the Faroe Islands by the Irish monks who settled these remote islands, the mountainsides were said to be covered in red flowers. Ella's omman (grandmother) tells her stories from those times, when the hills were red – before the sheep arrived, ate all the flowers, and ultimately caused the landscape to change colour from red to green.
Most Faroese children and adults live by the sea and on the sea. They sail, swim, dive from the rocks, and set toy boats afloat on the water. They know the sea as mist in the air and as salt on windows and doors. “A Faroese loves the sea — but fears it in a storm,” Ella is told. Yet Ella is terrified of the water. She cannot swim and fears that, because of it, she will never truly belong among her own people.
Puffin burrows are dangerous. They run several metres beneath the grassy skin of the mountains, tunnelling through the green turf in every direction and leaving behind porous, fragile layers of earth that can collapse without warning. Children and adults alike know never to venture too close to the cliff’s edge, out onto the treacherous grass that may well be the last thing they feel beneath their feet before plunging into the sea. Just like Estrid — one of the cursed — who forgets everything she has learned and finds herself trapped in an impossible situation.
One day, while the family is harvesting grass on the steep mountainsides above Vágur, Ella plunges over the cliff and into the furious Atlantic below, where waves shatter against the rocks. Her twin brother, Jólak, meant only to tease her, but loses his balance and drags her with him. Fortunately, he is the finest swimmer in the village — capable of rescuing his sister from a sea that does not always show mercy.
Beinisvørð is one of the Faroe Islands’ most awe-inspiring sea cliffs. Towering 470 metres above the Atlantic, it has long been feared and revered by local seafarers. Here, they say, the Old Ones whisper in the breakers, the huldufólk keep their hidden dwellings, and the drowned still speak through the sea. Its sister cliff is Skúvanes, rising 350 metres above the waves — the place where, in 2007, a young Danish woman comes to scatter her mother’s ashes.
